It`s not like becoming a plumber or a carpenter where you can just watch a few YouTube videos and get started. You need to know what you`re doing, and that takes time and effort.

To get you started on your journey, we`ve put together some pointers on things every electrician should know to succeed in this trade. These tips will help you get a job, keep clients happy, and set yourself apart from your competition.

Things to know before becoming an electrician

  1.     You will need to complete the official training, as
  2.     You will need a license to practice
  3.     You should then choose an area of expertise
  4.     There are some dangers that come with the job
  5.     You can potentially make a good salary

What SOFT skills do electricians need?

The list of things an electrician should know goes beyond technical training. As a contractor or freelancer, the chances are that you’ll be running your own business. This means that you should make sure you have:

  •  Thorough knowledge of building and construction

  • An understanding of how to interpret technical plans

  • A good grasp of maths

  • Great attention to detail and a commitment to being thorough

  • Good problem-solving skills

  • A good aptitude for customer service

  • The ability to be flexible

  • The ability to use your initiative

…and then of course there is the qualification!

What hard skills do electricians need?

In South Africa, there are many institutions that offer technical trade courses.

The N1, N2, and N3 national certificates for electrical engineering are three of the most recognized certificates that give you theoretical training, and with each level taking three months, you can complete your training in one year.

Remember however that this qualification then means you’re ready to do an apprenticeship. This is as important as it gives you on-the-job training in real-world situations. The alternative to the national certificate route is completing an apprenticeship program, which typically involves four days working in a related role and one day a week in a college environment. This route will take approximately three years but will then include all your theory and the apprenticeship.
