ELECTRICAL STARTER KIT BASICS YOU NEED

Here is a list of the best basic electrical accessories:

  • Circuit breakers

This electrical switch is automatically operated and prevents any damage caused by excess current from an electrical overload. It is an essential addition to a circuit board, to protect any building from an electrical fire.

  • Fuses

This electrical safety device provides overcurrent protection to an electrical circuit. Its main component is a metal wire or strip inside a tube. When too much current passes through it, the strip melts and cuts off the current, acting as a safety precaution against overloading and causing a shutdown or fire.

  • Lamp holders

Available in a variety of styles, these connectors directly connect a lamp to an electrical circuit. Depending on your need, lamp holders are available in pendant, swivel or bracket-style. They are also available in options that facilitate either screw-in or bayonet globes.

  • Plugs & Sockets

These come in various shapes, sizes and voltages, depending on what country you are in and what electrical equipment needs to be connected to what type of power source. In South Africa, we use plug types C, M & N (2-prong & 3-prong plugs). Type C plugs are available in Countour Plug & Europlug shapes.

  • Main power switch

Every home has a main power switch that has control over the power supply, whether it is a modern or traditionally built home. On single- phase circuits, the main switch used is an Iron-Clad Double Pole (ICDP) while on three-phased circuits the main power switch might be an Iron-Clad Triple Pole (ICTP) to be responsible for the power supply.

  • Power switch

This is an essential item, as it will ultimately add the functionality and usability to the component connected to the electrical circuit. It is also the quickest indicator of the presence of a current, and the best way to test if a connection is broken or is not conducting current.

TYPES OF POWER SWITCHES:

Switches are available in various styles, such as:

  • Surface
  • Flush
  • Ceiling
  • Pull
  • Push Button
  • Bed

They are also available in different types of phases:

  1. One-way switch – Used to control single circuits such as a component (e.g. lamp)

  2. Two-way switch – This is used where you need to divert the current in either of two directions (e.g. light switches at the bottom and top of staircases)
  3. Intermediate & Rotary switch – This is often used where a lamp needs to be controlled from more than two locations and is also often used in boardroom lighting or here larger rooms need to adhere to more innovative and sparse wiring structural skeletons.
