Building Together to Grow Community Entrepreneurship

An inspired partnership has finally come to fruition - in July the CoCreate Economic Development Hub in Stellenbosch will open its doors to local community entrepreneurs.

The result of collaborative partnership, the CoCreate Hub initiative started in 2019 when the Building Company’s CSI partner, Ranyaka Community Transformation, was awarded a ten-year lease for a historic building in the centre of the picturesque Winelands town. The former community clinic will now become a space to nurture future entrepreneurs and inject much-needed energy into the health of the local economy.

BUCO saw the immense potential of the project and came on board as one of the primary partners. We donated a wide range of building materials to help make this transformation possible – from doors, skirtings, lintels, concrete, cornices, copper pipes, tiles, rhino board, paving, paint and varnish to water tanks, basins, sinks, geysers, paving, post-form tops, plumbing pipes and accessories, and more, which helped to facilitate the dramatic transformation of the building.

Renovations in progress

“Working on a historic building brings new surprises every day,” says local project manager, Will Hammers. As the work unfolds, you never know what you are going to discover. “For example, one expects to find a concrete floor underneath a cement floor topping. In one room, we removed the topping – and there was no floor underneath! And because the walls aren’t straight, it’s a challenge to attach a straight piece of timber to it,” he adds. This made for interesting work when it comes to the installation of cornices and skirtings.

The CoCreate Hub remedies the need for inclusive trading and co-working space that caters to local community entrepreneurs, as well as training and mentoring facilities for local NGOs focusing on job creation and enterprise development. The multifunctional facility not only provides access to affordable working, trading and retail spaces, but also a space where Stellenbosch residents and visitors can eat local, shop local and experience a sense of connection with communities from all across town and surrounding communities.

If you are interested in registering at the CoCreate hub as an entrepreneur based in Stellenbosch, find out more about the offering HERE.
