Signs Its Time To Replace Your Geyser

Buco 01 Jul 2022

We think of modern innovations as tech that we hold in our hands and the ways in which that helps us transact with the world around us… but what of the common household geyser? Hot water at your fingertips in a minute.

Chances are you appreciate this somewhat more in winter than in summer, right? And you’ll appreciate it most when you start to experience geyser issues.

While a geyser is a long-term investment, it still has a lifespan. So the chance that you’ll experience common geyser problems at one home or another in your life isn’t minimal.

How do you know when your geyser needs to be replaced?

Here are 5 tips to look out for on how to tell if your geyser is faulty:

  1. Age
  2. Discoloured Water
  3. Unusual Noises
  4. Leaking
  5. Inadequate Heating

Common Geyser Problems

Your Geyser`s Age

Ever wonder how long geysers last? A decade (10 years) is the general guide to a geyser`s lifespan. This timeframe is considered impressive, however, so while you might be lucky and have had yours for ten years without trouble, it`s not a good idea to push it much further beyond that.

To check the age of your geyser, find the serial number with the manufacturer`s sticker; there will be a long number that begins with a letter, but the first two numbers are generally the year it was made.

Discoloured Water

Have you noticed that the hot water comes out of the tap with a reddish or rusty coloured tint? This could be a clear sign of rust within the geyser. As it is made of metal, your geyser is subject to rust (over time); discoloured water means that you have rust geyser issues that render your water unsafe. This means it`s time to change your geyser.

Unusual Noises

Do you hear odd sounds from your geyser, like clunking, banging or loud noises? This is usually due to sediment build-up which can happen while the geyser is being used. This is an urgent symptom when it comes to geyser issues and one that means you should call a professional plumber ASAP. The entire unit may need replacing.

Leaking

Leaking is never a good sign and is a sure way how to tell if a geyser is faulty! Remember that your geyser is made of metal, which expands and contracts as it heats and cools. Over time, this is likely to result in cracks from the pressure. A hissing sound or puddles in the trip tray — or worse still, watermarks on your ceiling — is likely to mean you have a leaking geyser and a plumber should be contacted immediately.

Inadequate Heating

Once your geyser issues are about leaking, your geyser will start to lose more functions. If you think about the pace at which a leaking geyser is required to keep up with the heating of new water in the tank… well it`s not designed to work that way. Sometimes the devices and mechanisms inside will wear down or break, causing your heater to stop heating. In some cases, this may require a simple repair, however, it could also require a full replacement.

Remember:

We all come from different size families with different routines when it comes to bathing/showering and washing up. Your geyser`s demands are unique to your family and its needs. It`s important to understand your geyser and how it works for you.
