Is Wiring Your Own Home Safe

Buco 17 Mar 2023

Electrical home wiring is — to most — a daunting task. Still, you may be tempted to try and do it yourself in order to save some money, but this is actually not a wise decision.

Home wiring

Wiring your own home is never safe. From testing home electrical wiring with the best electrical materials, this is a detailed job that takes a licensed professional. Rather call an electrician and let them take care of everything for you. They will ensure that the job is done properly and safely so that you can rest easy knowing your home is in good hands.

Is It legal to do your own electrical work?

No! Beyond the fact that you shouldn’t take the risks, it’s also illegal. The South African Governments regulations about any electrical installations state:

No person may do electrical installation work as an electrical contractor unless that person has been registered as an electrical contractor in terms of these Regulations.

When should a house be rewired?

As with general technological advancements, electrical wiring requires updated every number of years. It would be fair to say that most houses need rewiring every 20 – 30 years. Making sure your home wiring is safe and up to standard involves you contacting a professional, certified electrician or company so that they can confirm it meets South Africa’s electrical requirements, and/or advise you on what updates need to be done.

Let’s talk money!

First off, you should know that it is not a cheap exercise to update your home wiring. The cost of this project is because of the detail and safety aspect involved; rewiring a home means replacing the old wires with new, updated and higher-load ones. There might also be times when other upgrades might be required, such as the replacement of sockets and/or adding new power points.

But – beyond the safety aspect – it will also increase the value of your home and investment. Should the time come when you want to sell, a prospective buyer will wants to know about the electrical details of your home. And not only does it add value, but also provides peace of mind to the potential buyer on the safety aspect of your home’s electrical status.

Remember

Here’s the thing to remember about DIY wiring: don’t do it.

Doing your own home wiring is never safe. Trying to do the job yourself can be dangerous and could lead to serious injury or even death. Instead, call an electrician and let them take care of everything for you and rather leave the work to a professional.
