Whether due to load shedding, or a greater awareness of sustainable living, off-the-grid renewable energy is becoming less of a lifestyle choice and more of a necessity. Solar energy is becoming increasingly more and more affordable, but who needs to go out and invest in a pricey solar system for cooking when there’s a simpler more affordable way. Here, we are going to show you a simple 5-step process for building your very own solar oven.
WHAT IS A SOLAR OVEN?
It is an oven that utilises the UV-powered energy direct from sunlight to heat cook and pasteurize food.
WHAT ITEMS YOU’LL NEED:
- 2 x Cardboard boxes (one slightly larger than the other)
- Box knife / Scissors
- Clear tape / Glue
- Heavy Duty Tinfoil
- Polystyrene / Newspapers
- Picture frame with glass in (the frame should be the same size as your larger box)
- Black construction paper / Black spray-paint
- Glass cleaner
- Baking tray / Oven rack

On sunny days your oven should reach temperatures around 100ºC, which is perfect for cooking sausages or even baking cookies. Just insert your baking tray into the oven, close the lid and let the sun do the rest!
