Johan’s tip for
HOME DIY enthusiasts

  • Contemplate the scale of the job you have in mind. Do you have all the relevant tools available, or do you have to buy extra or rent? Do you have to hire in a service provider with a particular skill to help?
  • Draw up a plan
  • Budget! Compare quotes for materials (it does make a difference to save where you can)

THE PROBLEM
To sort out a very chaotic store room

TOOLS FOR THE JOB
  • Pencil
  • Measuring tape
  • Metal hand saw
  • Cordless drill, various drill and screw bits
  • Rubber mallet
MATERIALS
  • 38 mm 12 X 2m lengths square tubing
  • 38 mm 4 X three-way connectors
  • 38 mm 8 X four-way connectors
  • 5 packs Lock it (pk contains 20)
  • 9 X board bracket single packs (pk contains 2)
  • 4 X 38 mm end caps
  • 1 X Mark it 3-in-1
  • 3 X 2m X 0.66m Shutter ply (BUCO cuts board on request)

HOW TO

Johan measured the 38 mm tubing to the following sizes for his shelf unit to fit the store room:

  • Verticals length 2 m
  • Vertical depth 0.8 m
  • Shelf height 0.6 m

Saw the lengths to the appropriate sizes with the metal saw

If you think an angle grinder will quicken the job…think again it causes the warping of the metal. Not advised!

Use the rubber hammer to join the vertical and horizontal tubing lengths to build the shelf

The neighbour pitched at the perfect time to assist with the rather large shelf – DIY is better in pairs.

Measure the placement of the fasteners for the corners with the Universal measurer supplied and drill holes with the supplied drill bit

Secure the four-way connectors with the supplied Lock-It fasteners

Attach the board brackets to the horizontal tubing

Place the boards into the shelf.

JOB DONE!

Now time for the reward…

Now to order the chaos.

A very impressed and happy project manager.
